ReDiscover’s Kansas City Assessment & Triage

STABILIZATION AND OBSERVATION

ABOUT US

Persons 18 years and older are referred to KCATC by area law enforcement, EMS, hospitals, and community organizations. Walk-ins may also be assessed for eligibility during daylight hours.

A nurse and mental health professional will triage each individual to determine what needs can be addressed at the crisis center, including a comprehensive mental health assessment, shower, change of clothes, and a meal if needed.

Clients are able to stabilize for up to 23 hours in an observation room where they engage with a licensed social worker and Community Support Specialist to determine a successful discharge plan.

What happens at Discharge?

  • Linkage back to home/family or friends
  • Follow-up with a behavioral health provider and/or support services
  • Short-term Community Support services
  • Medication management
  • Connection to temporary shelter, recovery support programs, and other needed resources
  • Assistance accessing services (e.g. Medicaid, Disability/SSI, ID, birth certificate, etc.)

ReDiscover’s KCATC is committed to providing rapid access to triage, stabilization, and linkage to appropriate community services for individuals experiencing a behavioral health crisis.

About KC-ATC

KCATC is a partnership between Kansas City stakeholders – courts, law enforcement, hospitals, city officials and the Department of Mental Health – to divert persons with mental health and substance use disorder away from jails and area emergency rooms to a safe place where they can be assessed and stabilized. If needed, they will then be referred to behavioral health outpatient or residential services for treatment.

We serve individuals experiencing mental health, substance use disorder, and/or co-occurring disorders that are currently under-insured/uninsured, houseless, and/or using crisis services for daily needs.

KCATC has two units with a total of 18 reclining chairs. There are 9 chairs in the Sobering Unit for those presenting primarily with substance use disorder and 9 chairs available in the Stabilization Unit for those with a primary mental health issue.

Individuals may stay up to 23 hours. The crisis center is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
